FERNANDO TORRES WILL NEVER MAKE A RETURN

Cech in line for shock move to Turkey after losing Chelsea spot

Besiktas are leading the chase to sign out-of-favour Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech.
According to the 32-year-old's agent, Mithat Halis, a move to Turkey could be a big possibility for his client, who has been displaced as the Blues' first-choice goalkeeper this term by Thibaut Courtois.
Jose Mourinho elected to field the Belgian for the Premier League opener at Burnley in August and Cech has been limited to a handful of cup appearances since.
The Czech Republic international was No.1 at Stamford Bridge for over a decade but it now looks certain he will move on from the west London club to play regular first-team football.
Halis said: "We have not held talks yet. However, Chelsea have recently made an agreement with Besiktas. Chelsea have similar deals with Vitesse and other clubs.
"If Cech does become available Besiktas would become a potential destination."
Besiktas are likely to face fierce competition from French giants PSG and Monaco for Cech, however it appears the Turkish outfit are in pole position to sign him.

As Valdes heads to Man United could Liverpool sign Chelsea outcast? Goalkeeper targets for the Reds

Should Liverpool move for Malaga's Guillermo Ochoa? Click the arrow above right to see more possible goalkeeper transfer targets for Liverpool

He may have had an outstanding World Cup but Mexican glovesman Ochoa is now out in the cold at club level after moving to Malaga from Ajaccio. Also targeted by Arsenal, the 29-year-old opted for a free transfer to La Liga but is yet to play a single game and Rodgers may look at trying to get him on loan.

Liverpool have been dealt a huge blow with reports Victor Valdes is about to snub them and join Manchester United.
The former Barcelona man had long been a target for Brendan Rodgers, but now seems set to join Louis van Gaal’s revolution at Old Trafford.
With Simon Mignolet putting in some unconvincing performances for Liverpool lately, sections of the Reds' support are keen to see a new goalkeeper, at the very least, provide more competition for the Belgian.

Van der Sar responds to Januzaj links: 'Ajax can’t afford Man United starlet'

is now totally focused on West Ham and making up ground on Chelsea at the top of the Premier League.

Manchester United midfielder Adnan Januzaj will not be making a January switch to Ajax, according to the club's marketing director Edwin van der Sar.
Recent reports have suggested the 19-year-old may seek a move away from Old Trafford if his lack of first-team minutes continues under new manager Louis van Gaal, with the Amsterdam outfit one of the clubs mentioned with an interest.
Van der Sar himself spent six years at Old Trafford, winning five Premier League titles and theChampions League with the Red Devils before retiring in 2011.
And while the goalkeeping legend admitted he was a fan of Januzaj's talents, he confessed it would be difficult for Ajax to raise the funds required to bring him to the Eredivisie.
"Januzaj is struggling to earn minutes, but he will be fine," Van der Sar told Het Laatste Nieuws.
"Can Ajax offer him a lifeline? Well, if you have his agent's number, give it to me in confidence. But I fear we cannot afford to pay his salary."“Of course it was frustrating because in the first half we had enough chances to decide the game and we didn’t,” said Pellegrini.

Mourinho: Ready reckoner

Mourinho: Ready reckoner

The question of whether Diego Costa leads the Chelsea attack for the first time in a game at Old Trafford is a straight-forward one reportsJose Mourinho as Sunday’s big match draws near.
If the Barclays Premier League’s joint topscorer is fit enough to take to the pitch then he will be selected. There will be no thought towards easing him back into action with an eye on the weeks ahead.
‘I don’t protect players before a Man United game, unless he cannot play,’ explains Mourinho.
‘If there is a chance of playing, Old Trafford is not the place to protect players, it is the place to put the players who want to play and are ready to play. If Diego is ready to play, he plays.
‘I still don’t know who is available,’ adds the manager, who on Friday rated Ramires and John Mikel Obi, along with Diego Costa, as having a small chance of returning for this weekend’s game.
‘Normally two days before the game I know the team, I have no doubts, everything is clear in my brain. Now I need a lot of talk and information to finally make a decision.’
Diego Costa’s presence will be determined by the final training session this afternoon [Saturday] at Cobham, immediately prior to the squad travelling north.
‘He has to train without limitation, do a complete training session with the other guys without protection,’ stipulates Mourinho, who believes it is far too early in the season for anyone to write off this Manchester United side as not serious competition.
‘Man United are in a fantastic positon. You are in a difficult position when you don’t have the funds to be behind the rebuilding of a team. When you have the funds you have to buy well and coach them well, and I know Louis [van Gaal] is capable of buying and coaching them well so they are fine.
‘But we are very confident about ourselves. I am not interested in thinking which team Man UnIted are going to play, who is playing and who isn't playing.’
The Blues head into the match 10 points ahead of the Old Trafford outfit and five in front of their local rivals City, the team we shared the spoils with on our last visit to Manchester. Mourinho has built a strong reputation for leading from the front at clubs where he has enjoyed successful league campaigns, the victories spanning four countries. It is a thought he ponders as he targets a third Premier League title.
‘I like to be top of the league, especially because it gives you a little space for a mistake. We can be 100 per cent sure we will leave Old Trafford top of the league and this is the only reason I like to be in that position.
‘When you win something and you come from behind to do it, obviously you deserve it but you always depend on other results.
‘When I was second with Inter and then we won a title it was because we won points but also because Sampdoria beat Roma, like last season when Man CIty came from behind to win the title because Chelsea beat Liverpool at Anfield. It is better to be top of the league and not to depend on other teams’ results - so it is a little advantage when you are top of the league.’

Sunderland v Arsenal - Match Preview

By Chris Harris

THE QUOTE

"I consider every Premier League game winnable but every game can also be a danger. You win the games by producing the best performance you can and that’s what we have to do. I believe that last year we were very consistent against teams [like Sunderland] so let’s be inspired by that." - Arsène Wenger

THE SET-UP

'One-nil down, two-one up' was once a famous Arsenal terrace chant, sparked by a comeback victory to beat Liverpool in the 1987 League Cup final.

Nearly 30 years on an identical comeback - achieved with added drama - could provide Arsenal's season with the kick-start that Arsène Wenger craves.

If Kieran Gibbs and Lukas Podolski had not struck in the 90th and 91st minute respectively in Brussels, the team would have returned to London under a cloud and under increasing pressure. Instead, that last-gasp turnaround has put a spring in their step ahead of Saturday's trip to Sunderland.
Before the Anderlecht game, Wenger and Jack Wilsherewere making the case that Arsenal's points haul was not reflective of their performances this season. If anything, Wednesday night was the flipside of that.

"It was a tough game and having analysed it, we produced a lot of effort," said Wenger. "In the end of course people can say we were lucky to win the game but it’s not a coincidence. We didn’t give up and we showed the spirit that we have shown since the start of the season, and we were rewarded.

"That comeback puts us in a good position to qualify now and that’s the positive from the night. Let’s bring that win back into the Premier League. I think it can help us to gain confidence and also be stronger in the Premier League."

ARSENAL

Wenger must decide whether to freshen up his starting XI for a second away trip in three days, and he will be forced into at least one change at the Stadium of Light with Wilshere serving a one-match ban for accumulated bookings.

Theo Walcott is in contention for a first-team return but Wenger hinted at his pre-match press conference that the England international could be held back until the visit of Burnley next weekend.

That might open the door for Podolski, very much on the periphery this season but back in the headlines after a typically-lethal finish in Brussels.

"He’s a great player," said Wenger. "When you have many great players in your squad you have to remember that you can only play 11.
There’s a selection problem that you have but I think when they have the right attitude and the right spirit, like Lukas has, we know they can make an impact
Wenger on Podolski
"There’s a selection problem that you have but I think when they have the right attitude and the right spirit, like Lukas has, we know that they can make an impact and a difference when they come on."

Clean sheets have been hard to come by for Arsenal - they have one in eight Premier League matches - and that's a concern when you consider that last season's title challenge was built on the foundation of a resolute defence.

Wenger does have Calum Chambers at his disposal on Saturday - the 19-year-old was suspended last weekend - and the Frenchman is starting to draw his own conclusions about where the versatile summer signing will settle.

"If I had to bet today I would say centre back," said Wenger. "I wouldn’t rule out central midfield and of course he can play right back as well.

"When he was a kid he played in midfield and he has been moved to right back so he likes to be at the heart of a game. Physiologically he’s more a central player than a wide player.

"Calum has good vision, technique and a huge physical potential. I was very happy with our first goal [at Anderlecht] because it was our right back who set up our left back. The attacking quality is in him; Calum is 19 and he’s learning his job very quickly and very well."

THE OPPOSITION

Sunderland have spent the week licking their wounds after a humiliating 8-0 defeat at Southampton - the club's heaviest loss for 32 years.

"It is one of those days where everything goes against you and the confidence drops in the game," noted Wenger. "Once you’re 4-0 down, what can you hope for? What we have seen against Southampton in the League Cup is that they are a good side - they could be the surprise team of this season for sure."

The chances of Gus Poyet's team being so generous for a second consecutive weekend are remote and Arsenal must prepare themselves for opponents who will surely go back to basics and make solid defending their priority.

Whether Vito Mannone is retained in goal after Sunderland's humbling remains to be seen, but the former Arsenal keeper has had more plaudits than brickbats since he swapped Emirates Stadium for the Stadium of Light.

"He gained his place and he’s a very talented goalkeeper," said Wenger. "Here [at Arsenal] he was in the position of Emi Martinez.

"I had three very good goalkeepers and Vito didn’t get the games he deserved. He decided to move to Sunderland and I’m happy that he made that decision. He had big competition there as well but now he’s a regular player and I think he has done extremely well. I’m not surprised at all."

SUMMING UP

Wednesday's win was a shot in the arm for Arsenal. A dramatic victory, forged in unlikely circumstances, is the kind of boost that can have a knock-on effect in the next game, and hopefully beyond.

The momentum from that dramatic finale in Brussels, coupled with Sunderland's natural anxiety after their south-coast horror show, gives the Gunners the perfect incentive to start Saturday's game on the front foot.

If they do, a Premier League campaign that is in danger of being defined by draws could get a very welcome win. Wenger believes his team is close to finding the right formula - provided they can cut out those defensive lapses.

Team News

Arsenal: Walcott, Gnabry (match fitness), Koscielny (Achilles), Ospina (thigh), Ozil (knee), Sanogo (hamstring), Debuchy (ankle), Giroud (tibia)

Sunderland: Jones (hamstring), Alvarez (knee), Coates (hip/thigh) Giaccherini (ankle/foot)
"Last year we had 17 clean sheets with the same defence and this year we can’t produce that," he said. "We put a lot of effort into our work to be more efficient but we give chances away that very few other teams do. At the moment our opponents have made the most of what we have given away.

"We don’t have enough wins and it’s that little difference between the team who is completely confident and a team that wants it absolutely. I believe that there’s not a lot of distance between the two and that’s what we want to gain.

"We are getting stronger. I think we need to keep the spirit and attitude that has given us our consistency since the start of the season. We have to transform our quality into more efficiency and I think that’s linked with confidence.

"Apart from that we dominate our games and we just haven’t got the maximum from what we created. We need to continue to dominate games and the rest will come."

Sunderland away was a significant game for Arsenal last season - it featured Mesut Ozil's debut assist and a brace from Aaron Ramsey that showed his new-found scoring touch was no fluke.

A fourth consecutive win at the Stadium of Light would be the perfect end to a week which, for a while in Belgium, looked pretty bleak.

Boss: Di Maria fit for Blues clash

Boss: Di Maria fit for Blues clash

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has confirmed Angel Di Maria and Ander Herrera will be fit to face Chelsea on Sunday.
Both summer imports were substituted during the 2-2 draw at West Brom on Monday but are available to take on the Barclays Premier League leaders at Old Trafford this weekend.
"Ander was already fit for the last game and, with Di Maria, I said after the match that normally it [the injury] should not be so heavy and it's not heavy," stated van Gaal at his pre-match press conference at the Aon Training Complex.
"So he has trained. It was only the first day that he didn't train so he has trained from Thursday, no problem. I'm sorry to say no other players are returning. Even, for example, I let Michael Carrick play this evening in London for the reserves [at West Ham] because I believe that he needs that. He needs to play matches, especially when you are five months injured. He told me it [will be] his first appearance in the second team.
"Antonio Valencia and Jonny Evans are not fit enough, I think," added the boss on MUTV.

Louis van Gaal: Jose Mourinho became special by himself

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal insists he has not played a major role in Jose Mourinho becoming one of the world's most successful managers.
The Chelsea boss, who worked under Van Gaal at Barcelona, often credits much of his success to the Dutchman and his other mentor Bobby Robson
"He talks about me and Bobby Robson and I appreciate that, but you always do it by yourself," Van Gaal said.
The pair meet at Old Trafford on Sunday when United face Chelsea .
They first crossed paths 17 years ago when the Van Gaal offered Mourinho, then 34, a position on his coaching staff at the Nou Camp.

"Both sides have improved on last season, but with Wayne Rooney suspended, and especially if Diego Costa plays, I expect Mourinho to be consoling his old boss at full-time with a generous smile."
Mourinho, 51, has since forged a hugely successful management career of his own, which has yielded 20 trophies to date.
"He's such a wonderful coach," said Van Gaal, 63. "And to see that he's been a champion in different countries is fantastic.
"He's very special but he is very special for me because we've continued our relationship, which in the football world is not always normal. That's nice."
Jose Mourinho and Louis van Gaal
Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho embrace after the Champions League final in 2010, won by Mourinho's Inter Milan
The pair have been in opposing dug-outs only once before in a competitive fixture - the 2010 Champions League final, won by Mourinho's Inter against Van Gaal's Bayern.
And Van Gaal will have it all to do if he is to gain revenge on Sunday, with Chelsea top and unbeaten, and already 10 points clear of the Red Devils.
As for Mourinho, he said Van Gaal was now "an opponent" but made it clear that he still holds the United boss in the highest of regard.
"Everybody knows the respect I have for him. I never hide the respect, the relationship and the fact he was an important influence in my career," he said.
"Don't make me speak for half an hour about him. He knows what I feel about him.

REAL MADRID VS BARCELONA: LAWRO ON 'MOUTH-WATERING' El CLASICO

Real Madrid and Barcelona players

La Liga El Clasico: Real Madrid v Barcelona

I watched Barcelona beat Ajax in the Champions League on Tuesday and it will be interesting to see how Luis Suarez fits into their forward line on Saturday.
Barca's front three was Neymar on the left, Lionel Messi through the middle and Pedro on the right.
Pedro did a really good job but I wonder if he would be the player to make way because you would think Suarez will start. Suarez can play on that side because he is that good a player. He would not be wide right anyhow because Ivan Rakitic seems to hold that position as well in front of Dani Alves.
It is a pity that Gareth Bale is out for Real because otherwise it could be him, Cristiano Ronaldo and James Rodriguez against Messi, Suarez and Neymar.
Mind you, it is mouth-watering enough anyway. Ronaldo and Messi are, if anything, better than last season.
It is so hard to call but I would go for Real to edge it this time.
From what I've seen of them, the only thing that will stop them becoming the first team to win back-to-back Champions Leagues this season is their defensive problems because they can still have a bad day, but you can get to Barca at the back too.
If you are a football fan, you just sit and watch this game and enjoy it. As a neutral it is great because I am not too bothered who wins but I just know it will be full of absolutely everything - quality, intensity and lots of incident. It is becoming an unmissable event

Luis Suarez admits he is getting help to stop biting opponents

Luis Suarez says he is getting help in order to control his "impulse" to bite.
The striker, 27, who will make his Barcelona debut against Real Madrid on Saturday, was banned for four months for biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini during the World Cup.
Admitting he had a problem, Suarez told the Guardian Weekend magazine: "It is like an impulse, like a reaction.
"I believe I am on the right path now, dealing with the people who can help me, the right kind of people."
Suarez's attack on Chiellini was the third time the Uruguayan had bitten an opponent.

He had previously done the same to PSV Eindhoven's Otman Bakkalwhile playing for Ajax in 2010, and Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic when he was a Liverpool player in 2013.
"Everyone has different ways of defending themselves. In my case, the pressure and tension came out in that way," he added.
"There are other players who react by breaking someone's leg, or smashing someone's nose across their face. What happened with Chiellini is seen as worse.
"I understand why biting is seen so badly."
Luis Suarez and Giorgio Chiellini
Uruguay's 1-0 victory over Italy at the World Cup in June, when he bit defender Giorgio Chiellini, is the last time Suarez played a competitive game of football
Suarez, however, remains unrepentant about his clash with Manchester United's Patrice Evra in October 2011, when he was found guilty of racial abuse, banned for eight matches and fined £40,000.
"I know I was wrong with the biting but I was accused of racism without any proof," Suarez said

George Tucudean

George Tucudean is a fast learner as he gets to grips with new start at Charlton

George Tucudean is happy with how he has adjusted to the English game after scoring his second goal for Charlton last night.
The Romanian hit the opener before setting up Johnnie Jackson in the second half as Bob Peeters’s side held off a late onslaught to claim their first home victory in six weeks.
“Yoni [Buyens] gave me a good assist and I did what I have to do to score and everybody’s happy,” said Tucudean, who joined from Standard Liege in the summer.
“We work hard and we have to prove that we can play in England, especially players who are not from this country, we have to get used to this football. I’m adapting very well; it’s different from Belgian and Romanian football — it’s more technical, it’s more physical but up until now it’s fine.”
The striker replaced Igor Vetokele, who is nursing an Achilles problem, while first-team players Chris Solly and Johann Berg Gudmunsson were also sidelined as the manager was forced to name four substitutes below the age of 21.
Asked if Peeters needs to strengthen the squad, Tucudean insisted there are already players with enough quality to step up from the youth  ranks.
“We have good players in our academy,” he said. “Step by step they will get in the team, they will become used to the Championship and slowly make the step up to the big team.”
Charlton had dropped points from winning positions on five previous occasions before last night and there was a danger of history repeating itself as the visitors created a host of chances in the closing stages.
Peeters was relieved as his side bounced back from Saturday’s defeat at Bournemouth.
He said: “I think I grew older by 10 years. It was a massive result if you see which players we were missing.”
